GSoC due date extended to Monday

Google decided to push the GSoC due date for students to Monday so students had an entire weekend to work on their proposals. I have updated my last GSoC post to reflect this but I wanted to do a separate post to make sure people noticed the new info.

I didn't realize when I made my last GSoC post that the deadline for student applications is this Monday! That's still enough time to pull together an application for the Python Software Foundation (assuming you are still in university at any level, undergrad or grad school). We are trying to get more core projects this year, but the PSF is once again acting as an umbrella organization for Python projects that did not get cleared as a separate mentoring organization.


The GSoC site, the timeline, and the project ideas should be the core links needed to get an application together. One piece of advice I can offer is do not limit yourself to just what is listed on the wiki. Some of those ideas are good, others are not (remember, anyone can edit a wiki, even people with bad ideas). But if you have your own idea and it isn't listed then don't be afraid to propose your idea! Each proposal is read on its own and not based on whether it is an idea on the wiki. Plus your own idea might help your chances as we tend to get some overlap with some popular ideas and thus have to choose one out of several proposals for the same idea.

Going to mentor for the Google Summer of Code this year

I was actually planning on not participating this year. The first GSoC I mentored 1.5 students (Jeremy Hylton and I split mentor duties on one project). The next year I was co-admin for the PSF with Neal Norwitz. Having played both sides I was ready for a break.

But then I realized that if I really mean what I say when I state that I want to get more people involved in python-dev and work on lowering the barriers of entry, then that means I should probably be a mentor for GSoC.


I am hoping some of the project ideas I put up will get picked up. That way I don't have to worry about dealing with them at some point in my life. =) But I am definitely not doing more than a single student this year. I just hope this won't over-extend me and the student I end up mentoring does not get enough time from me.
